As its name would not suggest, the Golden Gate is painted an unmistakable red. The bridge is a glowing testament to suspension technology. Initially, the idea of constructing a bridge to connect the mile-stretch between San Francisco and Marin County was dismissed by the prophets of doom as a lunatic enterprise. The incredible power of the tides in the bay and the depth of the water appeared to legislate against any such technology overcoming these obstacles. Modern technology triumphed, however, and the Golden Gate is now San Franciscos most memorable landmark.
