Stephen starts with this and then, with startling speed, he skates three lines in both directions which immediately establish the Palaces perspective. The florid Gothic decoration is then filled in at each level and the quatrefoil decoration is scribbled over the triforium as he laughs to himself. Passers-by photograph him, others stand immediately in front of his field of vision. Stephen is oblivious to any interference and blithely carries on drawing - but the people are omitted from the work. The overwhelming vigorous monumentality of this building which Stephen captures on paper is in sharp contrast to the majestic, stately Doges Palace as drawn from San Giorgio. The physical intensity is conveyed because Stephen is so close to the building.
