During the programme that I watched there was a discussion about the artistry behind Stephen`s work, and whether it was art or technical drawing. For me it is definitely art. Stephen has his own system of mark-making, and method of codification, that he employs in order to represent the reality that he memorises. (July 10)

Diary of a frustrated painter

A few days later, I visit Stephen at his studio. Working by eye or using his thumb and forefinger, he rapidly translates the pencil lines in his sketchbook to ink on an A4 pad. Not long after that scans of the three completed sketches arrive. It is a marvel to look at them, and a privilege to have witnessed their conception. It is a privilege, too, to have met Stephen Wiltshire. (July 10)
